I'm not saying you shouldn't donate to them, or sign the petition or whatever. I'm saying that when I started looking closer, some of the things I saw made me a little wary.
I do know that some of the things they've done have helped. Because of some of the work they've done Kony is out of the country. They have made a difference, and things have changed.
I'm saying their goals are not goals that will really help the people of Uganda, and might be a little bit misguided. Yes, Kony needs to be brought down, but I'm not certain that sending in soldiers is the best plan. But the people of Uganda need schools, and hospitals and clinics readily available.
I'm not saying I won't support the movement. And yes, I would have donated a few dollars to help with the SOPA and PIPA fight. This is different to me because much of the money goes to efforts here, and making films to educate people here, rather than actually getting to the people in Uganda and helping them.
I really don't mind you replying as you did, I'm just trying to say that I want people to research, and be sure that the organization they're supporting is really doing what they want it to before jumping in. I would much rather give money to a group where most of my money was actually going to the Ugandan people. And it bothers me that they are using misleading information about how big the LRA is (I've seen estimates at around 250 people) and how much danger the people of Uganda are really in from them, and how active Kony has been (which is very little since 2006) in what's happening.
If, knowing about everything I've said here and what other people have said about it, you still feel good about your donation, awesome. If I had a little more money readily available, I would donate. Unfortunately, as a college student with no job, I have to be a little more conscientious about how I use my funds and do thorough research of my own about groups asking for donations.
